I already have HVAC climate control; I don’t have a humidity problem!
There is an industry-wide common misconception that an air conditioning system (HVAC) acts as a dehumidifier. While an air conditioner (AC) may remove some moisture from the air, it generally cannot remove enough moisture to maintain acceptable levels during different times of the year, such as during hot humid times, cooler humid times or during the winter. In the first case, the grains of moisture in the air simply cannot be overcome in the heat exchange process, in the middle case, the AC may not run enough to provide the needed drying effect and in the last case the AC will not run at all, providing zero dehumidification from the cooling process.
Unfortunately, an air conditioner was never designed to remove moisture; it was designed to remove heat from the air to keep a space cool. An AC’s ability to remove some humidity is simply a useful secondary byproduct of the process.
ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers) says in the #10 item in their article entitled TOP TEN THINGS ABOUT AIR-CONDITIONING
“Modern air conditioners dehumidify as they cool; you can see that by the water that drains away, but this dehumidification is incidental to their main job of controlling temperature. They cannot independently control both temperature and humidity.”
They go on to further say
“… conventional systems may not be able to sufficiently control the problem and can cause comfort or mold problems in certain situations. Some current high-end systems have enhanced dehumidification, but when the existing system cannot sufficiently dehumidify, it may be necessary to buy a stand-alone dehumidifier.”
So What Can You Do?
Add a properly located and sized piece of dehumidification equipment, either as a standalone component or integrated into a new or existing air conditioning system. The new dehumidification equipment will not only remove the damaging moisture in the air that was left behind by the air condition system, but can reduce energy costs by lowering HVAC run-times that were needed to control humidity. Reduced run-time not only saves on electrical bills, but also saves on wear and tear of costly HVAC parts.
